How (and WHY) to make Truth Treats

If you are like me, chances are that after Halloween you are faced with a difficult decision.

What to do with all of the candy that your kids have collected.

This year our kids collectively collected 17 POUNDS of candy. That is a WHOLE lot of candy.

We are fortunate enough to live in a wonderful neighborhood where we know our neighbors well, our kids go to school with just about every child in the neighborhood and well... everyone knows everyone. In addition, it seams as if every house we went to we knew and well, they were very generous with the candy.

With this being said, after Halloween night, we sat as a family and had a little chat. There was NO way that our kids could use this much candy and well, we were not about to throw it away. We could donate it to a local organization or sell it back to a local dentist but what we really wanted was to put this candy into action and bless our community. Now our kids were not on board at first, I mean they really connected with the triumph of their loot... but we had to put it into reality for them. Either they find a way to use the candy in a positive way or next year we limit the houses they visit to just our street (which would have given them still more than enough candy). It clicked. If they were going to be blessed by our neighbors and enjoy themselves each Halloween... then the blessing would need to be passed on.

And THAT was what birthed the idea of Truth Treats.

I reached out to my friend Melody Ross of Brave Girls Club and asked if we could use their truths to add a little encouragement to each treat we shared... She graciously said yes.

Melody has in the past done a very similar project on Black Friday, which is what made me think of her when we were trying to come up with an idea for this candy. If you have a chance... definitely check out their site... it will surely inspire some great ideas for the holidays as well as for your heart.

We created these truth treats to pass out to shoppers during Black Friday. This is a great time to catch people when they may need it most. As a family we have shared these truths during the holidays and you would be amazed at how easy it is to touch someone when they need it most. Although the holidays are usually surrounded by loved ones and togetherness... you'd be surprised as to how alone and discouraged the holidays can make people feel. One of the ladies we gave one of these random truths to (at an airport) actually cried when my daughter handed her a truth and gave my daughter a big hug. She told us that this was exactly what she needed to hear as she was going through something very difficult in her life. Kindness matters... and it matters the most when you let your heart lead you... and pave the way for good to happen.

So, it has been a little busy here in our house. Lots of changes, all good but keeping us busy. Crazy busy. It is nice to be able to get into a rhythm with it all.

Today I wanted to share with you my first meme for Liz Hicks Studios. I am not one for making memes, I see a lot of them and LOVE them, share them and feel so uplifted by them. Some of my favorites are from my sweet friends over at Brave Girls Club. It is no surprise to see them on my Facebook wall.

Yesterday, I felt the need to throw my hat into the meme pool. I was inspired by my friends named Amber (ironically, they both caught my attention at different times of the day). Through conversations with both of my friends at separate times I really felt these words spoken to my heart.

I think it is so common for us to be critical of ourselves. We often take others attitudes or opinions to heart even when they are just implied and not necessarily expressed. So often we even begin to imagine the response we would receive if ever we would dare to try something out of our comfort zone... or even taking a step towards that dream we hold tight to. I know I have been guilty of this so many times. I can remember PLENTY of times that I can now look back on and see a little bit clearer that I held myself back from stepping forward towards my purpose and dreams. It is human nature to be hard on ourselves and even some times see our dreams as far fetched or not reasonable for the person we are now. We often say to ourselves... "Oh that is something I will do in the future when I am more ________" or " I am not ready for something like _______" or the even more popular " I am not good enough (yet)". I am not sure what plagues each and every one of us to say such things to ourselves.

I can't remember exactly when it was but it was sometime during my illness last year, (when I truly couldn't do anything) I decided that this experience would not go in vain. That I had allowed myself to hold back on what I want to be doing with my life because of ____ and _____ and well every other excuse in the book. Something inside me snapped and it was as if I truly understood just what a waste it was for me to at least not TRY to do the things that are on my heart. I had realized that I had told myself NO way to long. All of the doubts I had assumed along the way, suddenly became void. Now, I am human and am in no way saying that these fears and doubts still don't stop me, but now they stop me in order to fully consider and think things through rather than to hold me back. My focus going forward has become a bit more clearer and has allowed me to organize a plan towards reaching those goals that stir passion in my heart.

So with this being said... I just want to share this little message with you all. This is my reminder that I don't have to hear NO before someone tells me. I can not assume someones answer or how they may see me. Fear and doubt are not the rule. Let truth and discernment take their places and build that future that is yours. No is not a bad word, in fact it is a good word a word that we learn to keep us from harm. It is just a word that we can't allow to be our norm. We have to live, build our future and with that is taking steps, even little ones towards what our purpose is. Life rushes by us so quickly. I have decided to take my time into my hands (AGAIN) and create my terms. As a part of this, I have promised myself to look into the things that I hold in my heart, honor my passion and take small steps towards the things I hope to have in my life. Slowing down, taking small strides and making informed decisions I believe will help to clear my head of that nagging NO that wants to pop in and taint my thoughts. This is my path, I hope that you will take time and consider what will help you in the process of taking steps towards your purpose.

Thanks again for stopping by. I am grateful for my brave and truthful friends, sharing their stories with me. I know that life gets crazy, and that schedules get busy... but I am so grateful for the time each of my friends (and you too!) take to spend with me.

Happy Friday!

GOOD is just fine... PAJWLH

I have been sitting on this project for sometime now. I can't really explain why except that for some reason or another...my thoughts or heart were not ready. Today is a great day to share it.

I made this canvas about a year and a half ago while I was on staff at my second Brave Girls Camp. Even as a staffer, I came to camp with the same openness as a camper. I needed to be there. I didn't think that I could love more women after my first camp. I left my first camp with a love, real love for my friends that I had made there. The kind of love that you know, loves you just as much if not more than you love them. The kind of love that gives, takes care of and treasures you. Yup... that kind of love. I was fortunate that both times I attended camp I had made true heart felt connections that I still treasure to this date. I have always had a tough time maintaining friendships with women and this experience made me forget all of that. Well now I am totally off topic, but as you can tell... these ladies mean a lot to me.

Back to my story...

At this camp, I created art from the heart. I chose words and images that were me at the time. This is one of them.

Let me back track to 6 months before I left for camp...

It was the end of summer, I was in transition; leaving a situation that was not good for me. I was letting go of friends, work, art... a whole lot of things that I loved dearly. Deep in my heart I knew that God had brought me to this place and that He would guide my heart through it as well (even as I write this, I CANNOT believe just how good He is to me and just HOW MUCH my heart is full of joy now) but at the time it seemed like a long and bumpy uphill battle.

At this time, a lot of my close friends were calling me up or emailing me to check in on how I was doing. The most common response from them was don't worry...everything will be alright or you are doing the right thing. And it was all true, everything was alright and yes I did do the right thing. One of my friends phone call is what stuck with me still to this day.

One of my friends who called to check in on me was having a really tough time at his job. For him to call me and check in at this time meant a lot to me since I knew that he was going through his own trials. When he first asked me how I was doing, I said. "I'm good I guess". His response to me was... "Well, sometimes good is just fine".

These words hit me to the core. I couldn't shake them, I could not let them leave my mind. They couldn't even if I wanted to.

Up until I heard these words, I had slowly allowed my life to be taken out of my own hands. I had not realized it yet, but my life had become something I didn't even recognize. Hearing these words reminded me that my life didn't have to be exciting, adventurous, over the top amazing. It just needed to be good. And that was just fine. I immediately felt my heart change. I looked at my situation and realized that what I saw as bad, God saw as good. I didn't know it at the time, but God was working His way toward making a better life for me and this was the first step towards that. I needed to change my perspective on what I needed out of life first and in order to do that, I had to hear these words from my friend.

GOOD IS JUST FINE- 6x6 Mixed Media Canvas

This image shows the layers that I placed as the base of my canvas. Dress pattern tissue and music note paper.

Here is the layer I placed on after, Mod Podge mixed with Smooch Spritz with gold glitter. I allowed the tissue paper to remain wrinkle and sealed it with bees wax.

For extra flair, I used gold foil on select places to create a tarnished patina look.

Here is the title, I textured it with Chip Art embossing tools, painted it with gold paint and glitter and distressed it with pen and ink.

This art piece sits in my studio as a reminder that Good is just fine. My life doesn't need to be what I had always dreamed it to be or as adventurous as my friends lives seemed to be. It just needed to be good. I am not exactly sure at what point the words good became not enough for me, but I have a feeling that it involved me being around the wrong people and listening to wrong things. Wrong is never right, as much as it may make sense... wrong is wrong and we have a feeling deep down inside of us that reminds us when we are confronted with wrong. I have for the longest time tried to tell myself that wrong was ok or maybe wrong wasn't too bad. But wrong always has a way of getting to you... luckily for me, God saw that I was surrounded by wrong and paved my exodus from it all. That little voice (feeling) deep inside of me started to speak up, speak louder and soon became loud so loud that I couldn't deny what it had been telling me for so long. I am forever grateful for this. So many lies, fears and insecurities made me feel that wrong was right, that I couldn't do better... but again God knew better and eventually I learned too, but that is another story.

So for this art journal prompt it is simple.

  • Creative - Use texture... whether you build up with paper, tissue, foil...whatever, get messy and build up some layers.
  • Prompt - What does the word GOOD mean to you. Do you need it to be EXCELLENT all the time like I did, or is good just fine?
I struggle sometimes sharing some of my stories, but I can't help but feel obligated to share my imperfections and insecurities in hopes that others will know they are not alone. I am not a counselor nor a therapist, so this is in no way meant to be therapy... but art has a way of helping us find truth, in ourselves, in our surroundings... in our relationships. It took me almost two years to develop from this beautiful message shared to me, but I can see the difference in me now and fully appreciate it. I pray that open hearts read this and that you find a story that doesn't necessarily speak to you, but that allows you to see that you are not alone.

We are all on our own paths, some ahead of each other, some behind... but our stories are our responsibility to share in the hopes that we can assist those to further their path in peace, love and comfort.  Judgment isn't always something we feel from others, most of the time it is something that we conflict on ourselves. I pray that sooner rather than later these hurts and fears are extinguished and that life can be lived as it was intended too.

I believe it will ♥

HI Liz, I am EXCITED to begin this journey!!!!!! It's about time I sat and re-evaluated my life and discover how i can improve to my maximum potential.

I would LOVE to nominate my best girlfriend i've known since birth (34 yrs!!) for this prize. This last year she has had a world of problems, house flooding and them spending the last 7 months living among boxes and all their stuff in one area without a living room table to eat at. As well, God graciously has blessed her with a fantastic husband this second time around, but I think this course could really benefit her because of all the negative treatment she was subjected to with the first one that tore her down emotionally. I would love to see her rise, discover herself and be able to have some awesome stuff happen to her this year.
Thanks Liz!

It was so wonderful to see all of your hearts pour out into these posts. It makes me smile to know that most of you (those whom I have grown to know through this industry or on my blog) have such a giving heart... it is a beautiful thing!

So Leica, if you could email me Primadonnaliz(at)yahoo(dot)com I will go ahead and let the girls over there at Brave Girls get your friend all ready and set!

Thank you all again, and I am sure that your friends will be thanking you too...for all of the wonderful things that you had said about them!

Soul Restoration- GIVEAWAY!

One of my favorite things about 2010 was being able to attend Brave Girl Camp in May. I won't say that it was life changing because well, I think that puts to much pressure on the program... but what I will say is that it was life affirming. The main thing that received from attending camp was remembering what it is that I want out of this life. This is SO IMPORTANT. Through out life we are constantly going, going, going trying to keep up with our own lives and sometimes others too. Somewhere in between all of this we soon forget what we are deep down in our core. We take on so many responsibilities, so many of other peoples deadlines and expectations... we have to keep going and going and going. Climbing and reaching for the top, and sometimes the top isn't even an option but we continue to reach and stretch till we are all stretched out, vacant and have nothing left to give. It is so hard to take a moment, stop ourselves and remind ourselves just what it is that we are reaching for striving for in the first place. So often our directions shift when we don't even know it.

Stopping and evaluating your direction is almost never an option even though it is a life necessity. This makes me wonder how ofter our own priorities are mixed up when we don't even have the time to remember what is important anymore.

So from camp, this is what I learned. It wasn't a specific lesson that was taught, words that were said or even advice that Melody or any of the other girls gave. It just simply was something that rested on my heart that while I was there, in one of the most secure environments I had ever been in that I was able to allow myself the time to remember what it is that I want for myself and for my family. Even my husband could see this in me after I returned.

This important lesson has stuck with me since May, and I have to say it has re-affirmed me day after day that the life that both my husband and I first decided that we wanted back in 2001 when we first were married... it is still a pretty good life, and well... we need to get back to that simple, love and family filled life.

That was my lesson, it may not be the same for everyone... but I hope that it is just as important for those who attend than it was for myself.

As a thank you to Brave Girls and to you all for following not only my journey but also that of my families... We (My husband and I) would love to giveaway one tuition to Soul Restoration which is a very similar curriculum than that from Brave Girl Camp. This is such an amazing experience so much that even my husband would agree!

Here is what you have to do. We want you to nominate someone that you think would benefit from this online art class. Just leave a comment here of someone that YOU think could really benefit from this. If you really want to attend this online course than have someone nominate YOU. The only entries will be those names of people that are written in a comment on this thread of the blog. When you are considering someone to nominate, remember that they don't have to be artsy, but you do want to make sure that it is something that they would enjoy and that they could benefit from. So that is it... simple. Just write someones name in a comment, or have someone nominate you in a comment for a chance to win!

I will pick a random winner on Wednesday so that you have some time to think about who to nominate, as well as have some people help nominate you too. The class starts tomorrow, but you will be able to pick up starting Wednesday.

So get out there, call a few friends have them nominate you or you can nominate them! The more times your name is nominated the better! I will post both the winning nominator and the nominee here on Wednesday so that you know who to thank for nominating you. please make sure also that they post where you are from ( example, I would like to nominate Liz Hicks from Ft. Collins, Co.) that way we can have an easier way of figuring out who the winner is.

The Brave Girls online community is up too, so if you would like to check out what is starting to happen over there, check it out here! This is a great place to meet other crafters that are preparing for soul restoration too.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at primadonnaliz(at)yahoo(dot)com

Thank you and good luck!

Brave New Girl...part 1

I really don't understand just why it has been so hard for me to share my heart about my Brave Girls experience... It is like the words are there... but there are so many that I want to share that I just can't seem to get it all out in one post. I have tried (three times) to do so and well all I have ended up with is three very long disjointed posts... so I have decided to take this week (or so) and share different parts of my experience and just why I think it was valuable for me.

First I need to say that although it seemed as if everything in my life was telling me NOT to go...

I DID IT ANYWAYS...

And this was the first time in a very long time.... that I did something for me... altogether... just for me (or so I thought).

My husband being the sweet heart that he is... worked his magic and sent me packing out the door and on my way to Idaho.

When I arrived to Brave Girls... I was immediately relaxed. If you know Melody Ross... than you know that from her blog to her facebook... she is honest, pure and easy to relate to. Well her sister is exactly the same way... with just the bare necessities... they have created this amazingly wonderful retreat that you are allowed to come as you are... and be loved ♥

Now this may not sound like something unheard of... or even original ... but THIS is. The GENUINE love and openness that is greeting you by all of the staff and other campers is astounding and I believe that it is a firm result of the family and heart that is behind it.

With this wonderful feeling of love and unconditional acceptance that was shared by everyone in the house... I was relaxed... unguarded and felt protected by the atmosphere of women whom had no expectation of me and just wanted an opportunity to get to know me and love me for who I am.

Now this is the first this that I want to share with you or rather ask you is...

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU KNEW THAT REGARDLESS IF YOU HAD SUCCESS OR FAILURE... PEOPLE WOULD STILL LOVE AND ACCEPT YOU JUST THE WAY YOU ARE?

My answer... I would SING...
All day and all night...

This is something that I realized at brave girls that I didn't even realize that I held back. I love singing always have and always will...I have sang for one... I have sang for hundreds.... doesn't matter the audience, I would sing, although a little nervous... I would still sing.

But something about the way that I felt at brave girls, that sense of security in knowing that everyone there, didn't care if I sang well or didn't they loved me anyways... made me sing like I had never sang before... I sang open and loud (I know as if I could get any louder) and completely unguarded. I never even knew that I held back when I would sing before, but here in the safety of our cabin, I sang with all my heart and loved it.

group time singing

beautiful Kathy playing the guitar

And so today I ask you... what would YOU do if you new that whether you would succeed or fail... EVERYONE watching you would STILL love, admire and protect you for who you are? It is not everyday that we get this opportunity... it is rarely to feel so completely open and free... and I am so grateful that this is just one of the many things I took home from Brave Girls Camp.

Thanks for starting this journey with me, sorry it has been WAY to long coming... but I am here... now ready to share bit by bit... the pieces of my heart that belong to this wonderful effort.

Yesterday...

This was my yesterday...

Yesterday we had an AMAZING day at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westmister, CO. (I will write a little more on this later...) Altogether for a stay at home mom, turned working mom... this was a treat... a glimpse of what I used to (and still do!) treasure, field trips with the kids (I really am lucky to have a job that allows me to do this!). I truly enjoy moments like this when it is just me and one of my kiddos exploring the world ♥

That was the first part of my day...

This was my next...

My Car

Her Car

As I left the parking lot of the kids school, oldest boy in tow... we were laughing and enjoying our time together I turned left, I turned right... there were no cars so I let go of the brake easing my way out of the parking spot...rolling right into what would turn my day in a downward spiral.

Now you can tell that there was no damage to the car that I had rolled into, it was a HUGE SUV and my mom van ended up with all of the damage, but what came at me was what really took it's toll on me. Out of the car came my kindergartners room mom (a mom I have worked hand in hand with for a few of their events) yelling and screaming at me like I have never been spoken to before... I understand she was angry, but I can not understand just how and why she could say some of the things she said to me. I have to say that I am sensitive... but I have learned to roll with things through the years but the choice of language and in front of my child was what shocked me the most. As I tried to compose myself and handle her with grace, she unfortunately would not cooperate and continued to take her anger out on me and the situation. It could have easily taken just a few minutes to give her my license and insurance info, but she insisted on venting...

Needless to say I came home deflated, I felt horrible myself and also for my son who had to hear words he had never heard before come out of a room moms mouth... I guess I just wasn't ready to see that innocence taken from my son.

With this clinging to me, I came home and tried to relax a little before the rest of the family came home... I checked my facebook and that is where I found this sweet video from the lovely Suzi blu (Love this girl so much it hurts!!!)

It is WORTH watching, please watch it through the end

Now I have been trying to find the right moment, words, feelings to express just what Brave Girls Camp meant to me... after watching this, it all fell into place.

Join me tomorrow as I share a bit or two of my experience... I am looking forward to this so much and pray I can accurately depict just how life changing Brave Girls is...

By the way... from this video I remembered that although this lady chose to unleash her hatred on me... I chose to let it bring me down...life is my choice... and I choose JOY.

At a loss for words...

I have been struggling the last few weeks with explaining just what I have been doing and where I was going... I don't know why, I guess it has just been tough to find the words...

Last week I was privileged to be a part of Brave Girls Camp hosted by Melody Ross. The whole journey start to finish has been a complete act of God... how I got there... being there and where I am now... Unfortunately for such miracles... it is really hard to express into words just what the heart is feeling... So excuse me as I take a day or two to find the right words to describe just what my heart is yearning to say...

Thank you!!!

XOXO

A message from a Diligent Girl...

Diligent

diligent
[ˈdɪlɪdʒənt]adj
1. careful and persevering in carrying out tasks or duties

Why yes... I am Diligent...

Although I have never fully understood the meaning or should I say, digested the meaning of diligence I choose to do so now. At this very moment I am choosing to follow through, to commit, to show my integrity in what I do and process before doing. I love this definition and the way that the writer chose to add the word "careful".

With the hustle and bustle of what this world has told us to be, it is no wonder that this word "Careful" struck a cord with me. The idea of taking the time to be methodical with actions and words should be a priority, yet it sometimes doesn't even make the short list, even with myself.

Again, the words of the Brave Girl birdie hit home and brought a smile to my face :)

Some more good words from the Brave Girl Birdie

Once again these words struck a chord within me. It never fails that each and every one of these emails sent to little ol' me nourishes my soul like an abundant feast to a starving person.

(click on the text to make the picture larger)

The things I find the most heartfelt about this message are:

  • Utilizing your skills and resources to the utmost potential
  • Brave Girls who CARE make the world a better place
  • they are reaching farther than they did last year
  • THEY ARE INCREDIBLE.

This last statement is something that should resonate within each and every one of YOU!

YOU are incredible, and if somebody hasn't told you lately, THAN I AM TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW! You would not be reading this at this particular moment unless you were not meant to read this!

As creative women (an men) you are resourceful, innovative, ingenious and thoroughly gifted... and all of this creativity is just waiting to bounce right out of you and on to your projects. Stretch yourself this coming up week. Go a little further than you have before and just be smart about the decisions and directions that you make.

If you have not yet signed up for this free newsletter I highly recommend it. This is not one of those emails that you just toss in your trash. I look forward to these emails. They are truly nuggets of truth that need to be shared. Click here to sign up for daily truths. Believe me... they are exactly what you need to hear daily!

Enjoy your weekend!

A little bird told me... AND I AM LISTENING!

So today....I woke up early. It wouldn't feel that different except for the fact that I didn't wake up to an alarm (electronic or one of my kiddos ☺) I woke up to worry. Now I have to say that there isn't much a girl in my position needs to worry about right now. I am lucky to have my husband by my side in our decisions, good healthy kids (minus a few fevers and coughs, but generally healthy), a wonderful place to live, and work. But this morning I woke up with an in decisive heart and a little note from Brave Girls Club. This little nugget of truth was like a rainstorm in a time of drought.

(Click on the pic to make it bigger to read ☺)

I love how Brave Girls Camp has taken the time to try and erase what the world is telling us and speak truth into the life of all who read. This little note was just the thing I needed to start my day off right. So if you haven't yet...make sure to sign up for their FREE newsletter. I believe that everyone is entitled to a positive support and that is what these little emails are...YOU are worth it and it only works if you allow yourself to hear it and receive it! They send out supportive daily truths that EVERYONE should hear. If you are not on their email list, YOU SHOULD BE! I don't normally solicit unless it is a company I feel strongly for and nothing makes me feel stronger than woman speaking truth into each other.

OK, so here is my little PSA for today,
You are worth it....you just need to know it and hear it ☺
and not in a fake tell you what you want to hear kind of way... in truth. EVERYONE has their strengths along with their weakness'. Understanding the difference, being realistic about your limits, focusing on the good rather than the bad.... this is all wrapped up in the truth we need to constantly hear.

And believe me we ALL need to hear it, understand it, and believe it.

I hope this has been a helpful encouragement ☺

Have a great day and be BLESSED!

xoxo,

~Liz
